PROJECT 8: Two Story Parking Lot Diorama

Plate on Principles of Design
Project Description

This has been one of the hardest and most fulfilling plates I’ve ever accomplished for my Visual Perception class this semester. The time, effort and energy I placed into figuring out the components and making the process work has been quite an adventure with a lot of small ups and downs along the way.The project has been heavily based on some artworks from a sculptor named Guillaume Lachapelle, a Canadian artist known for his use of the infinite mirror illusion to create this sort of infinite depth to his work. Seeing this I was inspired to create a diorama which utilized the same method used in his work by reflecting an area with a symmetrical structure over and over again in order to create this sort of infinite illusion. In order to do this I spent a lot of my time experimenting with how a set of mirrors can be used to achieve this effect. By using 4 sets of mirrors per floor with one piece being reflective, I can create the illusion of infinite depth for a parking lot setup placed in the middle. The first draft of the structure also involves an elevator at the side which would serve as the main moving component for the work.

The diorama took a lot of time to finish due to a lot of logistic problems as well as delays in sourcing the right materials for each of the important components. I’ve also broken some of the mirrors in the process of replicating the illusion, so I had to buy another set as well as some lights to use for the setup.Midway through the construction process I’ve also had to revise the main mechanism and elevator setup in order to create a more cohesive movement mechanism that compliments the depth of the main piece. Instead of having the elevator and parking lot side by side, I combined them together having the parking lot located inside of the elevator setup. And although the structure isn’t how normal elevators work, the piece still replicates the feeling of being inside the elevator space which further creates depth for the project.Overall, I’m really satisfied with how the components come together and how looking inside the project really makes you feel that there is so much more within the glass panel. Just wish that I had poured more energy into time management and with sourcing the materials! This has been one of my favorite plates for the semester.
